The Department of War (DoW) HBCU/MI Summer Research Internship Program provides students and recent graduates from STEM and DoW-relevant disciplines with immersive, hands-on research experiences at DoW facilities nationwide. By bridging academic learning with practical application, the program builds a pipeline of scientists and engineers prepared to contribute to the Department’s mission. Participants work directly with DoW professionals on projects at the forefront of innovation, gaining both technical skills and professional insights that enhance their educational and career trajectories.

Beyond research conducted at DoW facilities, the program provides participants with the opportunity to present their findings at the DoW Institutes of Higher Education Opportunities Workshop and Intern Symposium. The symposium showcases participants’ research contributions while strengthening the Department’s scientific enterprise through engagement between emerging STEM professionals and DoW scientists and engineers. In doing so, the DoW HBCU/MI Summer Research Internship Program advances national defense priorities while cultivating a highly skilled civilian workforce dedicated to innovation and service.

Primary Objectives

• Immerse HBCU/MI students and recent graduates into DoW research initiatives to foster early-career involvement in defense-related STEM and DoW-relevant fields.
• Enhance the visibility and awareness of DoW programs, activities, and career opportunities among HBCU/MI faculty, students, and alumni.
• Provide program participants with training, mentorship, and career preparation, ensuring they are well-equipped for successful STEM careers within the DoW.
• Increase the representation of HBCU/MI graduates in STEM disciplines critical to the DoW’s mission.
